November is a month when teachers and administrators alike are feeling spread thin. Between day-to-day operations and endless to-do lists, connection can easily take a back seat. If you’re looking for quick wins to strengthen relationships and support your staff during this busy season, now is the time to get back into classrooms; not to evaluate, but to encourage.
Everyone likes to hear what they are doing well. Just like making a positive phone call home to a parent builds a foundation of trust before you ever have to address a challenge, starting with positive feedback does the same for your staff. There will always be a time and place for formal evaluations that target growth opportunities, and those conversations are necessary. But leading with low-stakes, strength-focused walkthroughs lowers teacher anxiety, builds trust, and positions you as your team's biggest champion.
If you need a structured, supportive way to pop in, we’ve created a free World Language Walkthrough Observation Tool designed specifically for informal check-ins. Use it to focus on the positive practices happening in your building every day, and easily log wins that boost morale. And, bonus: it’ll work even if you’re observing a class taught in a language you don’t speak.
Here is how you can use this season to be present, be positive, and be proactive:
Be Present: Make brief, informal appearances in classrooms just to check in. Drop by for 5–10 minutes with our free observation tool to catch teachers doing things right.
Be Positive: Return to the goals your teachers set back at the start of the year. Instead of checking a box, ask how you can help them succeed. Do they need a thought partner? Connection to useful resources? Pro tip: If you have a meeting scheduled, consider whether it’s an option to do a walk-and-talk meeting outdoors. Fresh air and movement can transform a standard operational meeting into an opportunity to connect while still accomplishing important work.
Be Proactive: The one thing every educator (including you!) needs is time. If one of your teachers is struggling and you have the bandwidth, a one-time offer to cover a duty or part of a study hall so they can catch their breath or complete a task will pay dividends. Is there a meeting you might be able to release them from to give them some dedicated time to make progress towards a goal? Small, proactive gestures of relief signal that you truly have their back.
By showing up with positivity and supportive moves, you position yourself not just as an evaluator, but as your teachers’ biggest champion this season.
