Secrets of the Jungle

Description

Daniel is the leader of San Pedro, an Indigenous community set upon a Peruvian Amazon riverbank. The community members hunt, fish, and sell products to meet their basic needs. Daniel wants to prevent an oil company from buying the rights to their land. But opposing factions, who are interested in money, threaten the old hunter-gatherer way of life.

Miguel, Daniel's oldest son, is considered the "perfect" child. Although he has his father's favor, he knows there is a family secret that has been kept from him—a secret that could tear apart the family. Then there is Segundo, Daniel's second son. Daniel is unable to do anything other than criticize Segundo. Segundo feels inadequate, and to make matters worse, he harbors his own secret.

On a typical trek into the jungle with his hunting partners, Daniel gets lost. A search party returns without their leader, and the village fractures. Some members advocate selling the land. Others want to wait for Daniel's return. Can Daniel's sons help to find him? And what about the family secrets that surface during Daniel's absence? Will those revelations bring the family closer or rip them apart?

Brilliant!

This book is brilliant, readable, and doesn't talk down to students.
In a short book with simple vocabulary, the author manages to sustain the interest of the reader with suspenseful episodes (Will the father find his way out of the jungle? Will the village be "sold" to the company?) while providing a lot of information from a variety of perspective and make them relevant and connected to students.
Issues of interest to students are woven in: The environment (Global warming, controlled hunting, rubber tree cutting), political issues (exploitation from oil companies, difficult political choices shown in the conflict between the two leaders, village dynamics), education, language, technology, transportation, urban vs rural.
It manages to squeeze in some history with the museum connection and the Chinese immigration as well as spiritual practices (Spirit warning. Chaman. Ayahuasca) It intrigues the reader with the names of creatures and plants, such as pink dolphins; ways to find your way and live in the jungle (marks on trees to find way, hammock)
In spite of the format, the characters achieve some complexity, give a glimpse of challenges found in family relationships, and can provide ways to talk about self for students inclusively (people with disabilities, adoption, homosexuality, ...).
Throughout some humor is sprinkled.
Your students will LOVE it, and the suspense will keep them wanting to read the next chapter.
