Five Reasons Why Teachers Love Calendar Talk
  • Builds real classroom community – Daily calendar talk gives students a predictable, welcoming routine that helps them feel seen, connected, and comfortable speaking in the target language. Teachers love how quickly it transforms the room into a supportive learning space.
  • Creates effortless language acquisition – Because conversations start with the date, weather, and what’s happening in students’ lives, learners absorb vocabulary and structures naturally. Teachers don’t have to “force” language; it emerges through meaningful interaction.
  • Works with any curriculum or level – Whether you teach elementary, middle school, high school, or AP®, calendar talk fits seamlessly into your existing units. It’s flexible enough for beginners and rich enough for advanced learners.
  • Reduces prep while increasing engagement – Teachers appreciate that calendar talk is high‑interest and low‑prep. The book’s ready‑to‑use themes, vocabulary, and tips make it easy to start tomorrow without adding to your workload.
  • Supports ACTFL‑aligned proficiency growth – Calendar talk encourages interpretive and interpersonal communication every single day. Teachers see measurable gains in confidence, comprehension, and spontaneous language use—all aligned with ACTFL standards.

As someone who already does quite a bit of calendar talk in my class

As someone who already does quite a bit of calendar talk in my class, I find this book to be helpful in a few specific ways. It is leading me to reflect on the way in which I organize the calendar activities that I already use, to include more extension activities, and to think about how I am modifying this routine to keep it appropriately challenging for my upper level students.

In my opinion, the book is also a great intro for teachers who are not already using calendar talk but are interested in adding this routine to their class.
