Quick Start Guide

• Establish when and how often you will do the activity and how long you want it to take.

• Teacher tip: Beginning of the class period, at least 5 mins

• Plan to discuss the day of the week, month, date, and reminders (upcoming tests, class/school events, etc.).

• Teacher tip: Ask the class to spell out the words and write them on the board; write out events and have students write the event in their planners if they have them; talk about what they WILL/MUST do to prepare

• Decide which additional topic(s) to include, such as the weather or school activities.

• Teacher tip: Some of these topics can be the same every day (like weather), but try to mix it up to keep the students’ interest (weather where you are vs. the current conditions in another country)

• Prepare a list of vocabulary as it relates to your topic(s), such as words for holidays and traditions.

• Consider any supporting materials or props (calendars, clocks, etc) and/or websites you want to use (weather websites, etc.).

• Kick off your practice!

• Teacher tip: Leave room for spontaneity—you never know where the conversation will go and what teachable moments you could encounter!

• Teacher tip: Model topics so students know what’s expected and have a guide to follow; consider writing on the board/TPR
