Teach your students poetry using the close reading concept of having the student read and re-read the poems again and again. They learn to scrutinize every word, every phrase, and every sentence that could convey deeper meanings. Students learn to compare and contrast poems to other kinds of fiction and to nonfiction. The lessons ask them to write paragraph answers and longer, essay-style responses. In order to understand poetry, students need to know about poetic devices. These devices are covered in the lessons, and a glossary is included at the end of the book. The book also includes a fun section on poetry in music that your students will love! About the Author

Barbara Beam has been an English teacher for more than 20 years. She has taught all high school grades and levels from basic to AP, and SAT/ACT Prep to Creative Writing. In addition to coaching several different sports, including varsity basketball, Beam has also directed musicals. This vast array of experiences outside the classroom has helped shape her lesson plans and teaching as she incorporated drama, competition, and entertainment alongside classic literature and old-fashioned hard work. She has written five books and two musicals. Beam is currently serving as an administrator in North Carolina.
