New Year's Goals: An Easy Transition Back to School

JJ Morgan |

Kicking off a new semester is a reset moment for students and teachers alike. Instead of jumping back into “Unit X” with new vocabulary, assessments, and expectations, why not start with a goal-setting lesson to build connection first? Students are likely battling post-break brain fog that leaves them feeling less confident in speaking and responding. At the same time, with time away from school, they might need to be reminded of classroom routines. A “soft start” lesson about New Year’s goals can help rebuild some of that classroom trust before pushing new content.

Everyone has hopes, intentions, and wishes and a lesson that encourages students to focus on themselves might be just what you need. Let’s face it, when the content is about them, students are more attentive, and attention is the gateway to acquisition. Starting with goals signals that your class is about growth, not just grades, and encourages reflection and agency.

Need another reason to start the new semester with a goals lesson? If we’re being real, we know that students aren’t the only ones who need help recalibrating after break. January can come with a healthy dose of the Sunday Scaries—that moment when the joy of the weekend (or, in this case, winter break) collides with the mental load of teaching. Having a plan for easing into the new semester will help you relax and enjoy those final moments before returning to school.

Here’s a low-prep, soft-start New Year’s goals lesson for your first day back that centers students, lowers anxiety, and lets you focus on connection before content.
